That's especially convenient for Baal runs, where you have to switch player settings a lot of times (p1 at the beginning, p8 for waves, p3 for Baal), since you don't have to retype the whole command line every time. However, if you type the /players X command like 10 times in a short period of time (it's sufficient to type it once, then hit enter again, press up and confirm with enter again the next 9 times or so) it's saved between S&E (to the command line). That means, it remembers the player setting, but not the exact phrase you typed (in one game you usually can quick type the last command by simply hitting the up arrow when you open the command console - however, nothing will happen when you do that at the start of a session). Normally the game doesn't remember what you typed in the console once you leave a game (by that I mean a game session, not the game D2 itself).
